Leitor queixa-se: "Eu perdi minha amada esposa para a religião"
Dear Graham Norton: I've lost my beloved wife to religion
"I am now married to a completely different person" writes one reader of his relationship Photo: Ned Joliffe
Q: Dear Graham
I have been married 25 years with two grown-up children (17 and 19). Some 10 years ago my wife found religion – or rather religion found her – and she became a devout Jehovah’s Witness. This has changed her views and outlook on life considerably and while I try to understand these it invariably brings us into daily conflict.
I have tried to express my concerns to her but such is the strength of the Witnesses’ belief that the matter is not for discussion: she believes it is I who have a problem and need saving. I still love my wife, but have come to realise that I am now married to a completely different person. I think about leaving every day but I would miss my children – and we would all struggle to get by financially.
Unfortunately, I’m starting to see this as my only option. Can you help?
Paul, Sheffield
A: Dear Paul
This is very hard. From where you are standing, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have stolen your wife; but the truth is she gave herself away. It is hard to accept but the woman you married was clearly not happy – or at very least was not getting everything she needed from you and her children.
It is extremely difficult for anyone standing outside a religion to understand why somebody would reject the tangible love of a family for the promise of some ethereal joy after death, but that is what your wife has chosen to do. I’m sure it causes her great heartache that you and her family have not been saved.
The good news is that your children are young adults and will soon be capable of financial independence. Talk to them. Even if they are more sympathetic to the teachings of your wife’s religion than you, I’m sure they can understand the enormous strain it has put on your marriage.
This is one of those rare dilemmas where the solution must be unilateral because the other person doesn’t see the problem. Your wife will always choose her God over you and quite frankly I doubt she can really love you as a husband any longer since she must pity you in your unenlightened state. Paul – I urge you to live the life you want, because the argument between believers and doubters is only truly won after we are dead. Don’t wait until then.

The TV presenter and comedian advises readers. This week: what do you do when your partner becomes a devout Jehovah's Witness?

Talvez seja alguma destas situações:
- ela utilizou a religião para se livrar do marido porque estava farta dele:
- ela levou a sério o "casar somente no senhor" pensando que está agradando a Deus (apesar de estar casada...);
- ela conheceu outro homem lá no Salão, encontram-se em segredo para evitar uma Comissão;
- algum "esperto" do salão está dando-lhe esperanças, ela, tadinha, precisa de "apimentar" sua vida amorosa;
